More Than Just An Alaskan Fishing Guide

My name is Matt, and I’m the owner and premier guide of Kenai Kingpin.  I have been a Coast Guard-licensed Captain/Guide in Alaska for 17 years now, and I’m a local year-round resident of Soldotna, Alaska, where I’m lucky enough to have the world-famous Kenai River right in my backyard.

I’ve been fishing since I could walk, when my parents bought me your classic “Snoopy” pole and tackle box.  I developed a passion for fishing salmon and trout, tying flies, and making my own lures around the age of eight.

After attending college with a major in Fisheries Biology and working as a guide during the summers, I decided to pursue my dream of sharing the passion, excitement, and adventure of these outdoors pursuits with others by becoming a career fishing guide.

As a lifelong fishing enthusiast, being able to share my love of the outdoors and of the sport with people every day is a dream come true of mine.

Rivers We Travel

Lower Kenai River

The Lower Kenai River is a mid-size river that is accessible to both powerboats and drift boats. One of the main attractions on this river are rainbow trout and Dolly Varden, who feast on a plentiful food source of small fish, salmon eggs, and salmon carcasses. This abundant food source allows these fish to grow to record size!

Middle Kenai River

After fishing the Upper Kenai River, which starts at Bing’s Landing and ends at Skilak Lake, fishing the Middle Kenai River can be a great time. This river is not just for drift boats — fishing the Middle Kenai River with a motor can also be fun. The watershed has huge rainbow trout, steelhead (ocean-run), and plenty of salmon to fill your net.

Lower/Upper Kasilof River

The Kasilof River, or Ggasilatnu in Dena’ina, can be found on the Western Kenai Peninsula in southern Alaska. It flows northwest to Cook Inlet and is renowned for its Class II whitewater rapids. The lower section of the river is swift, and a challenge that one must be ready for. This river is unlike any other, and if you take it on, you’ll have an adventure that will last a lifetime.
