Rivers We Run

Kasilof River

What is the Kasilof River?

The Kasilof River, which originates in Tustumena Lake, is a cold and rapid river that flows north to Cook Inlet. It is a popular fishing spot with quick currents and underwater hazards difficult to detect. The upper section of the river has some class II whitewater rapids, which can be dangerous to inexperienced kayakers. There is public access to the lower section of the river at Sterling Highway.

Fishing in the Kasilof River

The Kasilof River is very different from the Kenai River. It’s a drift-only river, meaning boats and motors are not allowed. But this peaceful fishing experience will reward you with some tasty, fresh king salmon. The first section of the Kasilof we fish starts when a boat leaves Tustamena Lake and drifts down to the Sterling Highway. The second section of the Kasilof is from the Sterling Highway to tidewater.

If you want to fish for sockeye salmon, Kasilof makes a good option. The river filled with prestine gravel bars and scenic views. The peak time for these sockeye is late June to early July. For an even more epic fishing trip, float the upper section of the Kasilof and enjoy the rushing waterfalls and white water rapids.

After the salmon run on the Kasilof finishes in August, the silver salmon fishing is still good. Fishing consists of bouncing bait in shallow water and back channels for these fish. It’s hands-on, exciting fishing for these silver salmon.

The Kasilof River is also a popular spot for fall steelhead, which can arrive in late August and continue into November. These fish are caught and released and offer an excellent opportunity for double-digit days. The bright, shiny steelheads show up in late September, but the real action starts in October.
